The History of Baling Wire

With all the uses and variations of baling wire available today it is hard to believe that this innovative product is actually centuries old. Back in the 1800’s, metal wires started to be used in agricultural practices. By 1872, Charles Withington had invented the forefather to the modern baling press. At the time they used the power of horses to compress the metal strips around hay loaded by hand into the machine. Then the farmers would tie off the wires manually.

As you can imagine the original wires and methods were inconsistent and risky. By the 20th century, the advancement of tractors and machinery lead to baling wire being replaced with twine for most agricultural uses. Fortunately, as its use in agriculture dwindled, baling wire grew in popularity for industrial uses such as packaging, waste, and recycling. Its strength, flexibility, durability and low cost made it a popular choice by the mid to late 1900’s.

The baling wire of today has picked up a few new “tricks” that allow it to be used in an even broader range of industries. Things like galvanization, or dipping the wire in zinc to make it resistant to corrosion, quality control, and dependable gauging makes baling wire even more useful than ever before!
